WELDING OXYGEN

By Sgt Vernon L. Ambrose, 400 Perkins St Oakland, CA

One particular mission from Batchelor Field with Capt Wheless we took off at 10 am. Got up and had breakfast of spaghetti and tea and bread. Had to roll our own gasoline barrels and help ground crews service the planes before taking off. Were flying 2 to 3 planes per mission at that time. Most of our engines had 500 hours on them , and were using welding oxygen for the men in the plane which hurt some of their lungs. One engine gave us trouble 2 hours after leaving Batchelor Field so we turned back.
