Wayne & Corna lived in a nice home, by the standards of the time, across the road from the Kanona Coop Elevator. His father William had operated the Elevator for a while before William moved to Oberlin to run the Oberlin Coop Elevator. Wayne had moved to Hildreth Nebr where he ran a Coop Elevator. As Wayne was an old married man and a father, he was not called up. William had moved to Oberlin and Wayne back to Kanona by the time Rell returned from WWI. Little brother Earl was then old enough to vote and married so he took his turn at living on and farming the Home Place. With so may kids they all had to shift to make room.

When little I used to go to Kanona to vist Vincent where I'd stay a week then later to visit Myron & stay a week. Thus the Home Place, Oscar/Harrolds place, and Waynes place, the Elevator -- the environs of Kanona seemed like home to me too.

We always had a marvelous time. One time when staying with Vince there had been a heavy rain, Vince and I became tired of being cooped up all day inside and as soon as the rain let up we made a run in the mud over to say Hi to Myron and then return in time for dinner. A road to/from the elevator provided a near direct route from Vinces to Myrons. There was a large Rail road owned stockyard on the south side of the road. Vince and I decided to make the run back bare footed and had a marvelous time running and sliding in the mud, whooping and shouting all the way. When we got to the house Corna insisted that we clean off our feet at the pump before going beyond the kitchen. They had a luxury item at the time which was an inside pump, almost the equivalant of running water. Corna was soon aware we'd cut our feet and were smearing blood all over the lenolium kitchen floor. We just thought our feet were bruised from rocks or cans we didn't know we'd been cut from broken glass in the muddy road.  Corna soon had our cuts cleaned with disinfectant and wrapped in clean rags. We had to wear shoes for a few days till the cuts sealed shut and we could go bare footed again. Our feet were about like shoe leather from running bare foot most of the summer. Everyone was wonderful to us, all in the tradition of a farming neighborhood of close family friends.

We cousins tended to team up in accordance with our age group. Lemoin, Bob & French were in high school at about the same time and Jarrell was in their age group. Harold was a bit older but fit right in with them. Following them was Darrell Vincent & Myron. Darrell was two weeks older than Vincent and Myron a year younger. We were close enough to become very close buddies. The adjacent photo was taken at the time of a family picnic at the Harold Johnson place a mile east of the Home Place. It would have been difficult at the time to think of these three being future WWII wariors. Darrell in Army Air Corp, Vincent a Navy Pilot, & Myron in Pattons 3rd army in Europe. At the age shown we had just graduated from pollywags to riding bicycles and learning to hunt rabbits with a 22 rifle or 410 shot gun.

As soon as Lemoin and Luciel were old enough for high school Corna would move to Oberlin with them and set up a temporary home during school. This continued with Vivian and Vincent coming to town till they too graduated.

            Lemoin was a champianship wrestler in High School.

Vincent played basket ball and Vincent and Darrell played on the same football team, Vince playing right end offense and defence, Darrell Center offense and line backer defense. Myron & Darrell sang in the same Boys Quartet.

Vincent and Darrell graduated in the Class of 41' Vincent signed up for special training with the Navy. This eventually led to Vincent being a Navy Fighter Pilot flying off Carriers in the Pacific. After considerable combat Vince was shot down the last day of WWII of the coast of Japan, he had almost survived the war.

Lemoin, then married to Fay Walker, was an airborne gunnery instructor and operated out of Texas most of the war.
