Note: Calkins
(History of Norwich) says John Elderkin, carpenter & miller, the first
proprietor of the "Cove", emigrated to America in 1637, coming
first to Lynn & then to Dedham. Mr W W Chapin of Providence says he was
in Providence about 1650 when Daniel Comstock was there. As Elderkin must
have had a family at the time, this would furnish a motive for the migration
of Daniel from Providence to New London. Daniel Comstock, 01-29-1646,
acknowledges a free grant of 25 acres from Providence. Daniel Comstock, Providence, 06-24-1648,
and other young men arrested for giving a false Indian alarm. Benjamin Smith and Dan Cumbstock
propounded their houses with their land to the town (Providence) for sale
June 2 1655. Ordered (Providence) that Hen. Neale
have a six acre lot laid out to him adjoining to his meadow that he bought of
Dan Combstck Jan 27 1657. Dec 19 1658, New London has given Daniel
Comstock 100 acres of upland by the Sawmill brook. Daniel Comstock purchased, 1664, a farm
at Oxoboro near Uncasville (Hillhouse Geneal p266) some of which land remaind
in the family as late as 1931. The Constock Cemetery is located on this
property. Hempsteads Diary,p32, says "Old
Goodee Comstock died Feb 21 1713" This probably refers to Paltiah
(Elderkin) Comstock. "Dec 17 1697, Peeter Strickland receipts to his
brother-in-law, Daniel Constock administrator of the estate of his father,
Daniel Comstock, for twelve pounds, for Sanuel Young and Thomas Halliox of
Southold, L.I. as their wives part of the estate of their father, Daniel
Comstock, deceased." Samuel Young and Thomas Hallioz gave an
order Oct 9 1696 to their Mother, Palitiah Comstock, "to Pay our
patrimony due us, to our brother, Peter Strickland." Southold L.I. Sept 15 1688; Mary
Constock witness with Anna Youngs. Inventory, Nov 13 1683 of estate of
Daniel Comstock late of New London, deceased. Includes 150 acre bought of Mr
Loveland and 100 acres above Sawmill brook, also 100 acres given by the town
above Sawmill brook and forgotten in the inventory: 221 pounds, 17 shilling
and 6 pence. Administration to widow "Paltiell" to bring up
children, 'till Court order otherwise'. Daniel was referred to by some as
"Gideon". He was a volunteer, 1676, in the Narragansett War. |

William Bobbitt, on 10-27-1673, is in the Virginia State Archives in Richmond
Virginia. This copy was obtained and reproduced for all ..... The record is
from Land Grants, Book 8, page 481. The interpretation by John Bobbitt is: To all (to whom these presents shall
come, greeting in our Lord God everlasting); Whereas (it doth please our
Soverign Lord King Charles the Second); Now, know ye that, I Lord and
Governor, William Berkley, (appointed by the King, Governor of this
commonwealth etc.); Give, and Grant unto the said WILLIAM BOBBITT, a divident
of land, containing ninety six acres, three roods, 24 poles, on the south
side of the Appomattox River in Charles City County, extending as followeth.
1, beginning at a point of a hickory, near Mr Wittington, (thence along) his
line and running north along said line, by a line, 1/3 of the said line, 200
poles along Major Cooper, thence along his line to a corner continueing by
the same couse 40 poles to a small red oak near by Cattail branch, thence
along the line 80 degrees: 80 poles to a head of a valley, to a white oak
marked four ways, 80 degrees; 56 poles to Mr. Whittington, thence along his
line then 20 poles along his line, northeast; by 80 degrees; 296 poles; north
6 poles; to the place aforementioned. The said land being due by
transportation of two persons into this colony, to have and to hold etc.
Dated on this day, the 27th day of October, 1673. Wittnesses: John Leader,
Richard Tonstall. "William could not have been more
than 20 years of age when he arrived into the colony. He and his wife were
probably married in Wales. They had to be man & wife before the voyage in
order to receive 100 acres of land as husband and wife, for making the voyage
and paying their own transportation. They had no children at this time or
they would have received additional acreage for each child. They were the
youngest to apply in Oct 1673. The land received in 1673 is in present day
Hopewell Virginia. The Sturdivant & Bobbitt family came to the colonies
at the same time and were related. There is no written record but it is
believed that Williams wife "Anna" was Anna Sturdivant. John
Sturdivant, believed to be Anna's brother, received a land grant on Oct 28
1673. The first female Bobbitt mentioned in records was Joanna Bobbitt in
1679. Could they have had a daughter? Probably, few names of females were
ever mentioned in records as they were not taxable and could not buy or sell
land and seldom inherit land. Their names are seldom found except in marriage
records. William died in 1703, a member of the
Church of England. (His eldest son, William Bobbitt Jr, sold the land on May
12, 1703. The deed was recorded in Prince George Co, Virginia.) He is
believed to have been buried in the church yard of the "Ferry
Chapel" of Bristol Parish, the chapel was surrounded by a cemetary. The
chapel was near the ferry used for crossing the Appomattox river, and for
this reason was called the "Ferry Chapel". His grave has been
calculated to be under the old Norfolk & Western Railroad station in the
city of Petersburg Virginia. The railroad station was built on the site of
the cemetary space before the Civil War. William Jr was a member of the Jones
Hole Swamp Chapel Prince George Co Va. Names of vestrymen include Munford,
Green, Randolph, Jefferson, Peterson and More.The William Jr was married to
Mary Green. John the middle son was married to Sarah
Green and lived in Chowan Precinct in North Carlina. Joanna ??????? James the youngest was then a mature man
with land of his own in Hanover Co. |

Samuel was appointed Lieutenant of North
Company in New London in May 1719 and Captain in 1730.
On Dec 5 1721 Samuel Comstock of New
London deeds Sarah Knight that "upland granted to my father Daniel
Comstock Dec 19,1658" on west side of Mohegan river.
On March 17 1723 Samuel Comstock of New
London and wife Martha deed to Sarah Knight land.
He resided in Montville Conn and was
buried in the Society burying ground on Raymond Hill.

A land deed recorded in Chowan Precinct
NC, record #1182, pg 643 (present day Halifax NC) reads:
"John Green of Chowan Precinct, to
John Bobbitt of the same precinct, planter, on Oct 21, 1718, for the love and
affection, I bear my brother-in-law, 100 acres of land, on the north side of
the Morattock river, on the Camion Meadows, joining the Shokiko Meadow, and the
saind John Green. Witnessed by: Robert Hicks, John Nairne." (the Green
family had also been part of the Bristol Parish in Va).
From Bertie County 1725 records in Vol 1,
record book B, pg 46 reads:
"John Bobbitt and wife, Sarah, to
Zekiah Messee, on the 8th day of Nov, 1725, for ten pounds, for 300 acres of
land, on the west side of the Occonecheh Swamp, anjacent to Robert
Long......"
From Chowan Precinct, book 8, pg 176
reads:
"John Bobbitt to Barry Melton, on May
1, 1736 for 30 pounds.... for 300 acres on the north side of Maratuck river,
adjacent to Zekiah Messee, deceased, on the side of the Occonecheh Swamp, being
part of the tract frantd to John Bobbitt by patent for 600 actes, dated on the
first day of March 1719."
Johns will in Bertie Precinct on May 7
1736 reads:
"In the name of God, Ahmen: I John
Bobbitt being sick and weak but of perfect and sound mind and memory, praised
by the Almighty God, do make and declare this to be m;y last will and
testament, revoking all former wills and testaments by me at any time
heretofore made.
"Imprimus: I will that my just debts
and funeral expences be first paid.
"Item I give and bequeath unto ;my
first son, William Bobbitt 100 acres of land more or less, lying in the
Orraneechy Neck, where on I now live, to hold to him, his heirs and assigns
forever.
"Item: I give and bequeath unto my
son Thomas Bovvitt, one hundred acres of land lying in the Orraneechy Neck and
which land I bought of John Landers now tenanted to Roger Cass, to hold to him,
his heirs and assigns forever.
"Item: I give and bequeath unto my
two ;sons and three daughters named William, Thomas, Grances , Mary, and Amey,
my whole and sole personal estate, movable and immovable, that is money,
plated, beds, furniture, pewter, iron, brass, horses, mares, cattle, and all
manner of estate goods and chattels, not herin mentioned, to be equally divided
to and amoung said two sons and three daughters by even and equal portions. And
lastly I do here by appoint, William Bobbitt, Gobert Green , Hohn Massey and
James Brogran, my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament,
revoking all former wills by me at any time hertofore made. And I hope they
will be my executores as becometh honest men and Christians.
"Given under my had and seal this
seventh day of May Anno Donini 1736."
John, and the witnesses, signed his will.
John included between the first and last name his "mark", a big
capital I with horizontal line in the middle. These marks were forrunners to
cattle brands used in later times. A copy of this hand written document is in
the Bobbitt book.

Isham (WJWJI) volenteered for service in
Revolutionary War. He entered 2-1-1780 and discharged 9-1-1781. He served as a
First Sgt under Captain Christman. Several of his children later married into
the Christman family. He served under General Gren in the battle of Guilford
Court House. He was in the battle of Yorktown, under the command of Ger Green
until the surrender of Cornwallis. After surrender Isham was assigned as body
guard to Gov Alexander Martin of NC.
Home burned in 1834, lived with Nancy
& John Chrisman.
Isham died 3-6-1836 in Morgan Co Ill and
buried on the Paschal Farm near Markham Ill.

the Army of the Revolution:
"State
of Illinois
Sept 3 1832
County of Morgan At Open Court
Isham Bobbet a resident of this county,
aged 78 years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth under oath make the
following declaration:
That he entered the service of the United
States as a volunteer in the county of Warren, North Carolina, about the first
of Feb 1780. That he was mustered into service at that time under the command
of Captain Chirstman and marched to Halifax where we were met by Colonel Allen,
who took the command of the regiment. He marched us to Tarbough and thence to
Cross Creek and Camden, thence to Nelsons Ferry near Monks Corner, thirty miles
from Charleston. In a few days the Brittish troops took Charleston and then we
were marched back to Camden in company with Colonel Bluford, at which place we
parted from him. We marched under the command of General Caswell to
Fyettesville and continued stationed there until the last of June, at which time
we were discharded.
I was first sergeant during the whole of
this campaign. I then went and worked a three month tour with Colonel Long, a
Quarter Master General. I was a wagon maker and repaired wagon gear for the
army wagons. Some time in January
1781, Cornwallis was pursueing General Green. Isham Bobbitt then turned out a
vounteer under Captain George Nasworthy.
Colonel Williams commanded our regiment
and General Eaton commanded the brigade. We joined the Army under the command
of General Greene near Hillsborough and marched to Guilford Courthouse, where
an engagement was had with Cornwallis' army. After a few days rest, we pursued
him to Ramsey's mill on Deep River, where some fighting took place. After this,
our Captain was taken sick and returned home. General Green then turned his
course to South Carolina. He called for volunteers and I turned out under
Captain Harris and Colonel Reed about the first of April 1781, and served three
months under those officers from the first of April until the first of July. I
was discharged and returned home.
About the first of Sept, I volunteered as
a forage master under Captain Twitty and served in the light horse company and
found my own horse. I continued in that service three months, having been
discharged about the middle of Dec of the same year. Under Captain Twitty I
marched to Warrentown into the state of Virginia and pursued Cornwallis to
Little York. After the surrender of his army we returned to North Caroliina and
marched down near to Willmington as a life guard to Governor Martin. We then
returned to Harrisburg where we were discharged by order of Governor Martin and
we returned home to Warren County North Carolina.
My time of service in the first trip was
five months. The second tour as lader maker, three monthes. The third tour
under Nasworthy was two months. The fourth tour under Harris and Colonel Reed
was three months. The last tour under Captain Twitty was three months, making
in all sixteen months, that I was engaged in the service of the United States.

His son William signed as a witness
His son Stephen went before the justice of
the peace in Pike County Illinois in 1832 to make the following statement:
The said Isham and Elizabeth Bobbitt lived
together as man and wife to the time of the said death of Isham. They were
always recognized by their relations and their acquaintances as having been
lawfully married, and they always recognized this before married brothers and
sisters.
If the said Isham and Elizabeth were not
lawfully married persons at the birth of any of the childern, he the said
Stephen believes that he would have heard something about it, but as before
stated he has always understood and believed that they were lawfully married
before the birth of any children. The names and ages of the children were put
down in a Bible and the names of the children were as follows: William, Allen,
Winney, Stephen, John, Amey, Ganny, Betsey, Isham, Sally and Nancy. He has not
seen the Bible for about two years and he believes from the information of one
of his brothers-in-laws that the said Bible has been entirely destroyed."
On Feb 2 1833 Isham added the following to
the above Court record:
"Isham Bobbitt stated that he was
born on May 3 1754 in what was called then, Granville Co NC, the county was
subsequently divided and is now a new county, caller Warren, which includes the
residence of the correspondent. He has a record of his age in his pocession which
was made by his father in the family Bible, and the same Bible is now
appropriated by this department.
This applicant resided in Warren County
until the year of 1782. In 1782 he moved to Guilford Co NC and resided there
for about seven years. He moved to Spartenburg Co, SC and resided there about
fourteen years, the moved to Christian Ky and arrived there in 1803. He resided
there until the spring of 1827 when he moved to Morgan County, Illinois where
he now resides.
He received a written discharge which
along with a box of other papers, he left with William James if Guilford. When
he returned five years afterwards to obtain the box of papers, he found that
the papers had been destroyed and he not only lost his discharges but lost ten
thousand dollars of Continental money.
He is personally known by Joseph M.
Fairfields, David Brassmon, John Chrisman, Samuel B Jones and Moses Carlick and
John P Wilderson all of whom reside in the neighborhood. He is also known by
William McCord a clergyman who has alredy testified in his behalf, along with
William Bobbitt."
The name of Isham Bobbitt is engraved on a
little metal plaque and placed on the Morgan Co Ill court house.
Isham and Elizabeth were buried side by
side. For many years the graves were cared for by the James Caldwell chapter of
the Daughters of the American Revolution.
On June 6th 1938 Charles Holliday a great
great grandson of Isham had the remains moved from the Paschal farm to the
Chapin Cemetery in Chapin Ill. The following article was provide in 1979 by
Susanne Elizabeth Nystrom to the author of the Bobbitt book; believed to have
been from the local Chapin Ill paper in 1938:
"NEW GRAVE MADE FOR VETERAN OF
REVOLUTIONARY WAR BY A DESCENDANT"
"As the minds of citzens in this
community are recalling many events dating back to the pioneer day, none could
be of more interest than that which occured on June 6th 1938 when in a quiet
way the life of a partiot was reviewed.
"Through the reverent and patriotic
act of his great great grandson, Charles Holliday, the remains of Isham Bobbitt
and his grave stone were removed from the "Old Jones Graveyard" on
Wilbur Williams farn, (formerly the old Paschal farm) to Chapin cemetery,
Chapin Ill. His wife's remains will also be removed to Chapin cemetery. The
gravestone is still in good condition, despite the fact that the grave yard is
not protecteed from stock and horses.
"The Bobbitt lot in Chapin cemetery
has a fine monument and is beautifully kept. On the tablet placed on the Morgan
County courthoouse, the name of this patriot is spelled "Ishmil
Babbitt" but his family, the histories of Morgan and Scott counties and
his grave stone inscription spell his name as "Isham Bobbitt".
"The copy on the grave stone is
"Isham Bobbitt, a soldier of the Revolution Died, March 6, 1836 Aged 83
years." on the same stone, below is the following inscription
"Elizabeth, his wife died, March 6, 1847, aged 91 years.
"Isham Bobbitt has a number of
descendants in Morgan county. Isham and his wife, Elizabeth, had a son William
and William's son John G Bobbitt was born in Missouri Nov 6 1824 and came with
his parents to Morgan Co Ill in 1829. On Dec 14 1846 he married Martha J, a
daughter of Henry and Martha Newton of McLean Co Ill. They were the parents of
Mary Louise Bobbitt who was born Aug 1852. She married J B Holliday May 3 1877
at the Bobbitt homestead east of Chapin. They had four children Charles and
Frank of Chapin, Ralph of Springfield and Mabel Maher of Beardstown.
"William J Bobbitt erected a grist
mill on Big Branch now called Willow Branch Creek. He and his Father, Isham
Bobbitt had a mill in Missouri and they brought the "burr" stones
from Missiouri. After a number of years the mill burned."

I, Isham Bobbitt of Putnam Co and state of
Ill do herby make and declare this my last will and testament.
First: It is my will that my funeral
expenses and all my just debts be paid.
Second: I devise and bequeath to ;my
beloved wife, Cynthia Ann Bobbitt, the farm on which I now live, ... in all
about 120 acres, during her widowhood, and all cattle, horses and hogs by me
now owned; also all the household furniture, and other articles of personal
property not herein mentioned.
Third: it is my will that my children shall
each be charged uppon this my last will with the amount that I have heretofore
bestowed upon them severally, and what they may otherwise be owing to me, and
their obligations be deliverd to them upon their giving their receipts for the
amount to my executors, hereinafter appointed.
Fourth: It is my will that after the
marriage or decease of my wife, that what may be left and remaining shall be so
divided that each of my children with what they have already received shall
share equally. I hereby appoint my son-in-law Robert F Haynes and my son,
William W Bobbitt, executors.

In 1871 Cynthia Ann moved to Tichardson Co
Neb to live with her son David Frank Bobbitt. She died in 1885 at the home of
her son which was then Kansas City Mo.
Obituary of Cynthia Ann (Haggard) Bobbitt
"Died at the home of her son, Frank
Bobbitt in Kansas City, Mo on Thur Feb 25 1885 in the 77th year of her age, Mrs
Cynthia A Bobbitt.
"The subject of the above notice was
born near Winchester Ky and here maiden name was Haggard. She was married at
the age of fifteen to Isham Bobbitt who died about twenty years ago. They moved
to Ill in 1834, where she lived until she came west about four years ago. She
was an honored memeber and a consistant member of the Baptist church of 60
years. She was the mother of five children, three sons who are still living,
and two daughters who are dead. The remains were brought to this city and
according to her request the funeral was preached at the residence of her son
John W Bobbitt three miles northeast of Birdon, on Sat last by .... and was
buried in the Liberty Cemetery. On account of some mistake, the telegram sent
to Mr J W Bobbitt did not reach him and he was not aware of the sad news until
his brother arrived with the body.

aniversay & restoration of the statue Their great grandaughter Ila 91 was
recovering from a gaulstone operation in Oberlin Ks & being visited by
daughters; Phyllis Brown & Marjorie Kristman.)

In 1974 Mrs Hazel(Bobbitt) Kump of Oberlin
Ks went to Liberty Nebr to see if she could locate the graves. Mrs Heim a
descendant knew of a cemetery where Bobbitts were buried but the graves were
covered with vines and brush.
In 1976 Stacy Brown wrote:
"I am Stacy Brown son of E L Brown
who purchased the Old Bobbitt-Stratton farm from Maggie Curry Stratton where
Liberty Cemetery is located. It had been left to the ages. The cemetery has
recently been cleaned and eight stones have been reset. I have helped to move
four bodies to other cemeteries before the year of 1935. Now buried in the
cemetery is Dudley J Bobbitt 1838-1903, his wife Susan (Stratton) Bobbitt
1848-1925. They had nine children Alice Kegt, Elizabeth Cullen, Charlotte Brown
(my mother), Mary Lechliter, Norman Bobbitt, George Bobbitt, Maude Bobbitt,
Earl Bobbitt.
"As for now only one plot with one
stone marks the grave of Julia Bobbitt 1884. R W Bobbitt must be a brother of
Ducley Bobbitt I have heard the names many times. I an 79 years of age. Hope
this will help."

Commentary:
David Lamb was the youngest son. He
was age 74 in 1928 when he wrote two letters to Julia (Comstock-Morgan) Bobbitt
in Oberlin Ks. The first letter was dated 05-29-1928 and the second 07-15-1928.
His return address was 22 Park Street Norwood NY. I remember reading the letter
as a child when in my Grandmother Julia's home not long after learning how to
read. The note that contains the following information was written by me
sometime between 1955 & 1960 as a note of what the letter said from the
original letter I believe probably in the posession of Hazel (Bobbitt) Kump
whom I had visited to look at information she had gathered in her quest for
Geneology sources. Julia would have been 63 in 1928 and died of a heart attach
in 1936 at age 71. I have no idea how the correspondance came about except that
it was read with considerable interest by Julia's family. They had no knowledge
of their Bobbitt roots at that time. This
was part of Hazels subsequently successful quest. I made several small
pages of notes at the time, the source of whats contained here on the Morgans.
Included was the following note to myself of what the letter said:
"The July 15 letter says that either
Presson Morgan or Sabrina Truscott are decendents of John Quincy Adams
---"
Later information perhaps from Hazel showed
that Sabrina's mothers name and her middle name was Adams.
I was puzzeled about the spelling of
Presson. My recollection was that it was not clear if it was Presson or
Preston. I was also not sure about the spelling of Submitt Purchase - it seemed
clear but an odd name - I've since seen it used as a surname & the name of
a town.
It is conjecture on my part that Julia was
seeking information about her mothers family and that Curtis was responding to

John Quincy Adams was born 1735 of John
Adams a farmer who was a 4th generation decendant of Henry Adams who emigrated
to Mass from Devonshire England in 1636. John Quincy was born in Quincy Mass
(perhaps the name was changed) and a James C Adams in Springfield Mass.
With names like William P Morgan one
wonders if there is a connection to John P Morgan the banker. The encyclopedia
shows that Junius Spencer Morgan 1813-1890 Holyoke Mass was the father of J P
Morgan 1837-1913 born Hartford Conn. The encyclopedia contains many Morgans in
that general area including a Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan 1736 NJ
and before that a Sir Henry Morgan a buccaneer and deputy govenor of Jamaica
born in Wales 1635. Like Jones & Smith there were many with the name Morgan.
The William Bobbitt from Wales of 1654 soon yielded many Bobbitts by the
Revolutionary War. Relatives were joining relatives from across the Atlantic.
Such names extend way back distinguished primarily by their lack of the term
son sen von & van all of which mean son of. Van Johnson being John III!

"While in the act of climbing onto the
spring seat of a wagon loaded with apples down in the orchard of O C Ayers,
last Thursday, John Bobbitt lost his balance and fell helplessly to the hard,
dry ground. Mr Ayers at once rushed in his automobile to Dawson for a doctor,
and a phone call was made to Humboldt which brought Dr Waggener at the same
time. An investigation revealed that the hip joint was badly shattered, besides
other internal injuries. Uncle John's legion of friends are hopeful that his
indomitable pluck may take him over this sad mishap. It is generally conceded
that his advanced age of 78 years makes the case seem a hopeless one.
"Later: Since preparing the above
paragraph for the News, word comes that death has claimed the aged sufferer at
7 O'clock Tuesday morning in Dawson, Nebraska.
"John Bobbitt's death the morning of
the Old Settlers picnic adds to the impressiveness of the fact that the sturdy
old settlers who, in their vigorous young manhood, ventured into the trackless
prairies forty and fifty years ago will soon have passed from the stage of
action. Few indeed will have left a record for a more active life and checkered
career the Honest John Bobbitt. Born in Kentucky about 78 years ago, he moved
at an early age with his parents to Illinois. In the prime of vigorous young
manhood he led a colony of industrious neighbors in settling the rich country
around Dawson. He ranked with the most prosperous and progressive farmers of
the west. Following the bent of an active mind, he engaged in the business of
stock buying, and as his honest nature revolted at resorting to the
"tricks of the trade", too often employed by less scrupulous competitiors,
after years of hard tusseling with cattle and hogs, he found that while his
neighbors were enjoying the profits of his labor, he had only bitter
experiences.
"some twenty years ago with the idea
of re-establishing himself and his family on a firm basis on land, he moved to
western Nebraska, where he had only crop failures. He next sifted down to
Kansas, where a similar experience awaited him. Not withstanding all the
business reverses and keen disappointments, Uncle John's intrepid spirit was
such that he never conceived the idea of admitting that he was "down and
out". Dutiful children had often tried to make him desist from self
imposed cares, up to the moment of the sad accident. He was ambitious in
providing a home and a competency for a graithful wife, as the most ardent and
faithful lover.
"Besides the aged wife, four sons and
three daughteers are left to mourn the loss of a loving parent, who if he did
not bequeath a vast estate, left a reputation for sterling honesty, something
more enviable than the memory or a sordid wealth."
His son Francis Marian Bobbitt preceeded
him in death by three years.
Julia died in Cortez Colo 1923. Both John
and Julia are buried in Dawson Nebr. (between Liberty & Verdon Nebr)

school near Sutherland Nebr. Drove covered wagon from Nebr when son Ray was a
baby to join Francis in Okla where he had been with his brother Willis. He ran
a general store in a boom town that went bust when an adjacent town became
county seat. They came north to Oberlin Ks where Willis had started farming
south of town.

Dear Julia:
As
I can't pass the day with you I will do the next best thing and write you a
good long letter. How I long to have you and our little one with me. While I am
hard at work of course I don't think so much about it, but when night comes and
on Sunday I feel so homesick that it just seems like the time for us to see
each other never will come: but Julia I must not complain for I have a patient
loving little wife that is almost heart broken who has not uttered one word of
complaint but has tried to be cheerful and not discourage anyone by
complaining. Am I not right? And Julia if I did not see the evidence of your
loving kindness and consideration I would be one of the most miserable of men
for Julia you are the same to me as your was when we were married except you
are a great deal dearer to me now than then. I have often thought after
finishing a letter and sending it to you that you would think it cold or that I
wanted to see little Ray more than you, but you understood me didn't you. I
guess you would not feel jealous of me for loving our little boy. I know I have
made very many mistakes and have been a poor manager but Julia if a mans strong
love can atone for such mistakes you surely have the atonement. I see no
pleasure here without wishing your here to share it with me. I feel sorry for
you having to pack and get ready to move and come down here alone and how I
would like to be there to come along with you, I believe you would enjoy the
trip.

I
went to a meeting one night last week about 3 miles from here. They had been
holding meetings for a few nights, there was a house full, it was the
M.E.church.
Well
Julia I will try to tell you what I have been doing. I have not finished the
well that I began as I have been delayed by different things. I had to blast
about two out of 7 feet of slate and when I got though that struck solid rock
and then we had to find a drill and while looking for one we saw an outfit in
the field putting up the hay that we was to have. We went to see about it and
found that Thornton had put them in there to make the hay for him and Frost
ordered then to quit and they quit, had the hay almost all down, Frost and
Thornton had trouble over it almost a fight and shooting scrape. Frost would
have seen it through had it not have been that he had no written contract with
Thorton in regard to letting a man come on the place to put in fall wheat and
if he pinched him, Thorton, about the hay he would get contrary and not let us
come on the place to put in wheat, so Thornton said if I would settle with the
men for putting the hay up we could have it and I did so. They finished putting
it up for $1.00 a ton. There will be 15 ton or more.
It
is so dry that I can't do any plowing until it rains. We had a rain the 19th
that raised Mingo 4 feet but it is too dry to plow. I will go to work at making
the crossing below the railroad next week.
Julia
I would pack our cloths bedding and dishes just what we have to have to get
along with this winter ready to ship and the rest of the things we may have to
leave until I get money to pay freight on them unless they load a car. Tell
Will not to forget any of my harness. Uncle Frank & Denn Mayes are here
looking for a place.
You
must write and tell me if there is anything you want to know about moving. Will
you have money enough to pay pasturing on the horses and bring you down here?
Walter
Webb was fired from his job in Tulsa and left without paying the money he owed
Will and also left a board bill of $7.00. Don't know where he went.
Tell
aunt Lucy to write and tell me how much land they can handle and I will try and
find a place. Write and tell me what arrangements Will is going to make about
moving so that I can answer before you start.
You
asked if you could go up to Trents & Pilnows visiting. Of course you can go
if you have time. You know that I like to have you enjoy yourself all you can.
Do you suppose poor old Rover could stand the trip down here? He would be lots
of help to you. Where is his leg taken off and what do you suppose did it?

is his brother Willis R age 34. Frank is probably his fathers sister Terresa's
husband Frank Haynes age 56. Denn Mays is related via his fathers sister
Malissa, Mrs George Mays. Aunt Lucy is Julia's Fathers sister age 46 married to
John Gummere farming near Sutherland Nebr (20 mi west of North Platte).]
Francis
farmed near Sandsprings Okl (the NW edge of Tulsa) where Ila was born. Due to
contaminated oily drinking water the family moved west to Walthal, no longer on
a map, near Ringwood (20 mi west of Enid) where Earl & Hazel were born.
Francis continued to farm until he suffered an injury while plowing. He then operated
a general store which included women's and men's wear with living quarters and
a hotel upstairs. After making the decision to move to Oberlin they held a sale
& the left-over merchandise was shipped to Dresden Ks and sold to Lance
Alexander. Margaret was born in Oberlin.
After
living in a rented house for a short time Francis & Julia purchased the
house at 709 W Hall next to a Chautauqua Park. Later Francis built a house at
705 W Hall which was the family home till Julia passed away. Francis also built
the Chris Mines home NW of Oberlin. It was while working there that Ila
remembers talking over the phone for the first time, an exciting memory for
her. The spring of 1906 was a cold and damp one and after Francis completed
their new home he developed a bad cold which the Drs could not control. He was
taken to Christs hospital in Topeka where he died Feb 3, 1906. Ila recalled;
"my father was a natural musician. He owned and played many different
instruments. One precious memory I have is when he played the old pedal organ
while one of us kids stood behind him holding his harp in his mouth - a regular
orchestra! This is a special memory because he said, 'Ila can hold it the
best!' The Old Base Drum was given to the Oberlin Band."
Julia
was left with five kids to support, which she did by sewing and ironing in her
home to help with expenses. The family had a cow for milk, raised their own
chickens, had their own garden .... There was a well in back for water and an
out house for normal use and thunder-mugs for winter nights. In later years
each of her kids their spouses and kids lived at Grandma's house for a brief
time to get started. The grandchildren took their turns and cleaning the
chicken house, hoeing weeds, etc. The stepsons worked together to add on a back
porch & install electric lights. The Barclay boys knew their directions
seated on the outhouse throne but lost orientation when outside. Heating was
with a central stove and in winter mornings families knew the togetherness of
rekindling the fire and warming front and aft sides of the anatomy from its
radiant heat. There was a pendulum was clock on the living room wall that
audibly ticked away time in the silence of the night. Julia had long flowing
hair carried as was typical of her times rolled on top of her head. We
grandkids knew her as a kind and gentle lady, it was not a surprise to find
that she had been a school teacher before they were married. Grandmas room was
off base to us grandkids. On occasion we were permitted to see the large picture
of Grandad on one wall, he was a nice looking man; black hair and blue eyes.
Julia and her kids always referred to him as Papa. Thirty years later Julia's
wish to "join Papa" was granted.

Commentary:
To
write that my Father Rell was a Banker does not convey the Dynamic wonderful
person my cousin Don Kump congers to mind when, his face radiating a
mischievous smile, he giggles as he tells the story of:
Remember the time Uncle Rell took a car
load of us kids from a Thanksgiving dinner at Uncle Ray's house in Atwood to a
movie in Oberlin? The men wanted to play Pinnacle and us kids wanted to
"go to the movie". Exasperated with our pleading, we knew & he
knew he'd take us, Rell loaded us in the car and we lit out on the old gravel
coated often rutty US36 for Oberlin leaving a trail of dust. We kids were
grinning ear to ear to each other not minding in the least the high speed
drive. Dad was chomping away at his cigar not wanting to smoke with the car
full of us kids - chewing on that cigar seemed to help cope with task at hand.
After a spell there was a mouth full of spit to unload - it was habitual,
driving those country roads to lean his head back & unload out the window -
and he did. Except the window was rolled up! It had been rolled up at the
request of us kids in the back - it was windy at that clip. The "chaws
worth", with thrust enough to reach the far side of the road, simply
became a big splat on the inside of the window. This did nothing sooth his mood
- suitable words were blocked by the tightened bite on his cigar and the presence
of us kids. He simply leaned his shoulder into the mess and wiped it off on his
coat! Oh but he was disgusted with himself. Us kids didn't say a word, as if
this was an every get together event. In later years Don gets to laughing and
it's contagious as he repaints the image of that trip. Ah but if I could only
write it as he can tell it! I can even hear Dad and Uncle Lee laughing, Don
enjoyed retelling it.

Being
house bound because of illness one has few alternatives; read, write and
reminisce, and sit in my easy chair and watch the cars, trucks, pickups, vans
and what have you roll up and down Penn Ave.
Recently
my thoughts have dwelt on our first real home on West Hall next to City Park,
which later became Chautauqua Park, and our new home which Papa built.
We
arrived in Oberlin on June 6, 1904, after living in Dresden for two months. The
left-over merchandise from our father's store in Ringwood, Okla, had been
shipped by freight via Rock Island RR after selling the merchandise to Lance
Alexander we came on to Oberlin. Our first rented home owned by Mr Vale was up
Griffith Ave, a block south of Hi-way 36. This house was torn down years ago.
Our second rented house was at 309 W Commercial, west of the Methodist
Church. Our sister Margaret was born in
this house, June 15, 1905.
In
the Register of Deeds office it is recorded in Book 33-330, "F. M.
(Francis Marian) and Julia Bobbitt received the deed dated Oct 2, 1905 at 3:05
pm to lots 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10, Block 19 Summit Add to Oberlin. Purchase price was
$1200 - Paid $600 down; mortgage for $600." The previous owner was a Mr
Witham.
It
would seem that our Papa had dreams from the very beginning. Apparently he
started the new house at 705 W Hall, soon after our moving to the property in
the fall of 1905. In the 75 years ago item in the Oberlin Herald recently it
stated "Mr Bobbitt is erecting a house east of the City Park." I
remember that our Father helped to build the new Chis Mines home on his farm northwest
of Oberlin, because our first telephone conversation was with him when he
called from the Mines home to our neighbors the Jim Mahannas. We did not have a
phone yet. What a thrill to talk to him.
The new house was practically finished by
the spring of 1906. It had been a cold, wet spring and our father had taken a
cold, resulting in a condition which could not be conquered by Oberlin Doctors.
He was taken to Christs Hospital in Topeka; (now Stormant Vale) where he died
June 3 1906. A post mortum was performed and was diagnosed mastoid. Medical
technology at that time had not reached the point of a cure. So it was that in
less than eight months after our move to our home by the Park our Papa was
gone. He had built for us a new home which we were all able to enjoy until we
were all married and gone from home. Our mother rented out the new house for 8
or 9 years. A bedroom was added, built by Geo McMullen, as we were becoming
grown up young folks, and looked forward to moving into the newer home, which
we did around 1915. Dad and I were married in this house Feb 15, 1920. Our
mother lived here until her death of a heart attach Sept 9, 1936.
In
more recent years the house has been paneled, remodeled, to include modern
facilities and is very attractive. Brother Ray built a house in between our
"new house" and the one next to the Park. This old home has also been
remodeld and is extremely attractive.
Our
Papa was a natural musician, playing any instrument he picked up. His favorite
was the violin. He bro't it, and his cornet, harpsicord and his big base drum
from Oklahoma. He would play our old pedal organ while one of us held his harp
in his mouth from over his shoulders. That was an "orchestra" in
itself.

Sometime
ago while I was recouperating from an illness my thoughts seemed to center on
the home at 705 W Hall which our father had just completed before his death in
June 1906. I was married in this home
and our mother passed away in the home. I had the inspiration to write
"Proud of my Papa", at this time.
I am equally proud of my Moma. It was
always Papa and Moma in those days. Her parents both died in Marble Rock, Iowa,
when she was very, very young. She lived with her grandparents, her Aunt Em
Rosencrans and Uncle Will Comstock until she was grown. She had the courage,
faith and stamina to withstand the trials and hardships which were her lot for
a good part of her life.
She taught school in Iowa and later came
to Sutherland, Nebraska, to visit her Aunt Lucy Gummere. She taught one term in
that vicinity. Her hand writting was beautiful. I have never seen any which was
as nearly perfect. Her marriage certificate is filled out in her own
handwriting. She met our father, Francis Bobbitt, who was farming in this
vicinity. They were married March 23-1890. Two children, a little girl Marvel
and a little boy Willie died in infancy. Brother Ray was born in Nebraska, a
healthy one. Oklahoma, or Indian Territory then, was open for claims and
homesteads. Wanting to try it out, our father went to Indian Territory in the
spring of 1894. Mother followed later with year old Ray, driving a covered
wagon. I was born near Tulsa in 1896. The family later moved to Walthal, a post
office grocery store town, where Earl and Hazel were born. Then later to
Ringwood, when our father gave up farming after an injury. Father and mother
ran a grocery-drygoods store until the urge to come to Kansas was too great.
Mother used to say "We could become nicely settled on one place, when it
was up and move again". She always seemed to take it in stride.
We landed in Dresden via Rock Island in
April 1904, and on to Oberlin June 6. Then it was that Papa bought the home at
709 W Hall in 1905 and built the new house at 705 W Hall, on vacant lots. His
death in Christ's Hospital in Topeka took him at such a young age, not quite 38
in June 1906. Then again our mother must muster up her courage and faith to
carry on alone to care for her five young children. Sister Margret was born in
Oberlin June 15-1905. Ray was 12, I was 10, Earl 8, Hazel 6 and Margaret nearly
1 year old. I can never remember "going hungry". We had three cows
and chickens at our home next to the old Chautauqua Park. These helped a lot to
feed us. To help with expenses mother did sewing and ironing at home for other
people. At mealtime we all sat down together at the table and bowed our heads
while mother asked the blessing. These are fond memories as it seemed in later
years that school activities, jobs or whatever prevented us from always
gathering at the table at the same time.
Mama continued to live in the home which
our Papa built until all the children had left the nest and until her death
Sept 9-1936. On Sunday Sept 6, after Phyllis's 9th birthday on the 4th, we were
having a family dinner at our home at 306 W Oak. The boys were enjoying a card
game and we girls just visiting in the afternoon when Moma said if we didn't
mind she believed she would go home. The boys wanted to take her home but being
the wonderful mother she was, she insisted on walking. She walked everyplace
she went in those days. She suffered the heart attach that evening. She lived
until brother Earl arrived from St Louis on Wednesday eve Sept 9.
Ila "celibrated" the 4th of
July Statue of Liberty centenial with her two daughters in her room at the
Decatur County hospital. She was recovering from a Gaul Stone operation some
two weeks after being taken to the hospital from her room in the Good Sameritan
Home where she celebrated her 90th birthday in Feb. Aug 12 she was moved from
the Hospitals Extended Care Unit back to the Home. Her oldest daughter Phyllis
and son visited her the weekend of Aug 17th. Lee, Jack and Cecilia Kump helped
gather information on their family for this document while across the street
from the Home at "Ila's" house. The next evening Darrell visited with
Phyllis, Paula & George Brown at their home in Castle Rock Colo. Paula left
to start her Sr year at college.

Commentary:
Lee was raised on a farm near Jennings,
moved to Oberlin and started work at the Decatur National Bank where he met
Hazel Bobbitt. They were married in 1925, Lee 21, Hazel 25. In 1927 Lee went to
work for Roberts Motor Co in the newly opened Ford Garage. 1927 was the last
year of the Model T.
The streets of Oberlin were paved in
durable red brick shortly after WWI. The Model T a proven durable navagator of
country roads was soon the primary man made vehicle about town and across the
country. Garages were added to homes, alleys & streets maintained,
driveways create to house this noisy mechanism that evolved from contraption to
family automobile worthy of a garage. The Model T Ford was a legend in it's own
time, causing roads to be built from coast to coast, the public was in love
with this "Tin Lizzy" they also called "Fliver". Upon
cranking her to life Lizzy literaly Flivered like an excited horse impatient to
go!
Lee became the prime mover of events at
the Ford garage from parts, sales, repairs & the books; he was "the
Ford man" in Oberlin almost from the begining.
The Model A was produced from 1928
through 1931, a Model B for part of 1932 then the Ford V-8 dominated the domain
of automotive engines through to WWII. The Model A's golden years were spoiled
by the stock market crash of 29' and deepening Depression. While the nation
endured the great depression the
midwest also coped with duststorms during the early/mid 30's. Selling cars and
keeping the business afloat was not an easy task. The tales Lee can tell of
mechanics, salesmen customers, circumstance provide wonderfull insight of the
horseless carriage replacing the horse - of the diverse personalities about
town & country - those were difficult and frequently humerous times.
Younger Sons Don & Jack took to the
Ford garage business as ducks to water, with Warren avoiding such for academic
pursuits that led him to medicine.

GRANDAD, Lee's father John, was a special
person & personality. Tales of Grandad as numerous as Grandad's marvolous
tales, he cast his his humor and influence on all about him. John was born
10-24 1870 in Arcadia Wis, and died, still young, at 103 6-21-1973 Oberlin
Kansas. His wife Barbara Nerminger was his partner managing the operations of a
farm household and raising their two boys Lee & George. Later in life after
moving to town John married Claudine _________ widowed wife of a dentist. John
possesed a keen mind, terrific health, and a very pragmatic positive outlook on
the ups and downs of life. Warren has perhaps already documented some of the
many facinating stories, like their initial arrival in western Kansas when John
was age 7, starting a homestead.
John spent an afternoon at the Ford
garage visiting with Warren and I, we only spoke to keep His Story going. (The
following is the essence of what John told us.)
John's Mothers name was Frances Krizer
born Hart Minn. John, his Mother and a "fresh" milk cow had a lot of
"togetherness" pulling a plow to break open sod on their Home Stead
North West of Jennings. This was in 1877. His father tried to manhandle the
plow which kept digging deeper, pulling it out after they pulled it, they were
"sawing" through sod the hard way. Persons from a wagon train passing
by and showed his father how to fix the plow to run level. John did not care
for the life imposed by his father on his mother. He told of how his father had
lost out in the hotel business and trusting their future to a ride west to the
end of the rail road for a new start. They were met by an uncle at a place
called Buffalo Flats. Cowboys caught and tied up a fresh cow to feed Johns
younger brother who was then a baby. The Uncle took them north and loaned them
a fresh cow. They made a dugout in the side of a hill as a place to stay for
the winter. After sawing through the sod they hand planted their first crop.
Then Johns father left them to go to work on the Railroad being extended west
to earn cash for starting the farm. As a boy John hiked over the plains looking
for signs of Buffalo hunters, carrying home fresh remains to be hung up to dry
to make "jerkin" as food for the winter.

HAZEL (BOBBITT) KUMP
Hazel (Bobbitt) Kump was born June
29,1900 near Ringwood Okla. She died March 6 1984 at Decatur County Hospital at
the age of 83. She had been in ill health for many years.
She was the daughter of Francis Marion
and Julia (Comstock) Bobbitt. At the age of four she moved with her parents to
Oberlin where she grew to womanhood. She attended Oberlin Elementary School and
graduated from Decatur County High School in 1919.
After graduation, she accepted a position
with the Oberlin National Bank where she met her future husband. She was united
in marriage to Lee R. Kump on Feb 21 1925 in Oberlin by the Rev J E Bartholomew
and to this union were born three sons.
She was a lifelong member of the
Christian Church where she served as Sunday School superintendent in the
primary department for many years. She was an avid student of history,
particularly of early days in Kansas and Decatur County. She recorded the
genealogy of her family, tracing her ancestry back to John Comstock whe
emigrated from England to Weymouth Mass in 1639 and including John Quincy
Adams.
She was a mumber of Eastern Star of
Oberlin and had recieved her 50 year pin. She was a charter member of Oberlin
Ameican Legion Auxiliary.
Surviviors include her husband Lee R
Kump; three sons, Dr Warren L Kujp and wife Patty of Minneapolis, Minn, Don R
Kump and wife Jean Ann and Jack R Kump and wife Cecilia, all of Oberlin; eight
grandchildren; five great grandchildren two sisters, Mrs R F (Ila) Landau,
Oberlin and Mrs Francis Barclay, Rogers, Ark, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
two brothers Ray and Earl Bobbitt and infant brother and sister.
Funeral services were held at 11am
Saturday March 10 from United Church of Oberlin with the Rev Grant Davis
officiating. Interment was in Oberlin Cemetery.
A memorial was established to the Heart
Fund.
